Nicht schlecht! Endlich kommt auch die Stummfilmfassung von "Ben Hur" auf DVD. Bei der 1959er Fassung kann man aber nur hoffen, daß Warner einen neuen Transfer von 65/70mm-Elementen vornimmt, denn der jetzige Transfer wurde von einem 35mm-Reduction-Print erstellt. Bei den 35mm-Prints fehlen links und rechts Bildinformationen. Um das korrekte Bildformat von 2.76:1 zu erreichen hat man das Bild oben und unnten auch noch mal beschnitten. Ein Bild davon kann man sich beim American Widescreen Museum machen. Der letzte Screenshot zeigt einen 70mm-Print und den Bildausschnitt der DVD. Das Bildformat stimmt also, nur der Bildausschnitt auf keinen Fall.
Bei der Ankündigung zu "King Kong" stört mich ein wenig, daß Peter Jackson in 3 Featuretten vertreten ist. Nur weil er gerade das Remake dreht?
Außerdem vermisse ich noch die Ankündigungen von Audiokommentaren. Für "The Wizard of Oz" existiert bereits ein AK. Dieser war auf der LaserDisc des Box-Sets enthalten. Außerdem wäre es äußerst ärgerlich, wenn "King Kong" keinen AK enthalten würde.

Hi,
Der 25er Ben Hur  Sehr sehr schön! Auch der rest klingt interessant (wobei ich New Jack City noch nie viel abgewinnen konnte). Bin mal gespannt wie viel noch aus dem Oz Bild raus zu holen ist.
Das mit Jackson ist wirklich etwas seltsam, besonders da ich (bei aller liebe zu seinen Filmen) nicht glaube das er da viel Interesantes und Intelligentes vom Stapel lassen wird. Naja, besser so als garkein Bonusmaterial.

Auf Ben Hur freue ich ich schon. Werde den Film aber nur unter der Voraussetzung kaufen, dass das Bildformat/-ausschnitt auch dem Original entspricht.
Hoffentlich wird es nicht nur bei dem Audiokommentar von Heston bleiben. Der war mir etwas zäh. Viele neue Information wurden dabei nicht wiedergegeben. Heston hat sich dabei auch sehr lange Pausen erlaubt. Vielleicht wird uns Rudy Behlmer mit einem Audiokommentar beehren. Er war schon auf der Doku "Ben-Hur: The Making of an Epic" zu sehen. |

Outsiders ist klasse, New Jack City würde ich nicht empfehlen, besser vorher mal ausleihen oder so.

Im gestrigen HomeTheaterForum-Chat mit Warner Bros. wurde folgendes zu einigen der DVDs gesagt:
"Ben-Hur"
- Die 1959er Fassung wird von neu restauriertem 65mm-Material gemastered. Man kann also das originale Bildformat und den richtigen Bildausschnitt erwarten.
- Es wird auch Bonusmaterial zur 1925er Fassung geben.
"The Outsiders"
- Es wird sich um einen "Extended Cut" handeln.
- Die DVD erscheint noch 2005.
"The Wizard of Oz"
- Es wurde ein Ultra-Resolution-Transfer in 4k durchgeführt.
- Man kann viele neue Extras erwarten.
"King Kong"
- Interviews mit Fay Wray werden enthalten sein.
- Es gibt einen Termin, dieser wurde aber leider nicht verraten.

Ein wirklich schönes "Ben-Hur-Set mit den Extras der alten DVD und einigen neuen. Der Audiokommentar von Charlton Heston wurde also um die Ausführungen eines Filmhistorikers ergänzt. Der alte AK behandelte nämlich nur einige Szenen des Films. Sehr schön auch die isolierte Musik-Tonspur. Die 1994er Doku ist enthalten, hinzugekommen sind die "The Epic that changed Cinema"- und "Directed by William Wyler"-Dokumentationen. Bin mal gespannt, was es genau mit dem "A Journey Through Pictures"-Feature auf sich hat. Leider gibt es wohl keine Extras, die sich explizit auf die Niblo-Verfilmung von 1925 beziehen. Sehr schade!

So langsam werden die Details der fünf Sets veröffentlicht. Jetzt ist Coppolas "The Outsiders" dran. Fehlen also nur noch "The Wizard of Oz" und "King Kong".

So! Neuigkeiten zum "The Wizard of Oz"-Set:
Es wird ein 2-DVD-Set und ein 3-DVD-Set geben. Beide enthalten den Film natürlich mit einem neuen "Ultra Resolution"-Transfer, einem neuen Audiokommentar des Filmhistorikers John Fricke, vier Dokumentationen, davon eine über die Restaurierung, Outtakes, gelöschte Szenen, 8mm-Aufnahmen von Harold Arlen von den Dreharbeiten und einer nicht mehr existenten Szene, Aufnahme-Sessions der Songs, Radio-Programme und Trailer. Vieles davon ist natürlich schon von der sehr gut bestückten DVD bekannt, die ja seit Jahren erhältlich ist, aber beim 3-DVD-Set sieht es da schon ganz anders auf. Bei der Edition wird auf der Bonus-DVD vier Stunden an weiterem Material enthalten sein. Dieses beschäftigt sich mit dem "Oz"-Autor L. Frank Baum, es wird fünf "Oz"-Filme geben, die schon vor 1939 gedreht wurden, darunter auch die Verfilmung von 1910 und außerdem Reproduktionen der Einladungen und des Filmprogramms zur Premiere des Films im Grauman's Chinese Theatre.
Beide Sets erscheinen am 25. Oktober 2005.

Both versions of the upcoming "Oz" DVDs will include a new digital transfer of the original movie using Warner's proprietary "Ultra-Resolution" technology. The soundtrack has been remastered as well. Special features include a new commentary from historian John Fricke; four documentaries, including one on the restoration process; outtakes and deleted scenes; home movies made on the "Oz" set by composer Harold Arlen; and an "Oz Jukebox" of recording session materials, radio shows and promo spots.
The three-disc edition also includes four hours devoted to Baum; five pre-1939 "Oz" movies, the earliest of which dates to 1910; and reproductions of the invitation and program for the film's premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. |

About the Movie: Adapted from L. Frank Baum's timeless children's tale about a Kansas girl's journey over the rainbow, The Wizard of Oz opened at Loew's Capitol Theatre in New York on August 17, 1939. The film was directed by Victor Fleming (who that same year directed Gone With the Wind), produced by Mervyn LeRoy, and scored by Herbert Stothart, with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg. Ray Bolger appeared as the Scarecrow; Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, Jack Haley as the Tin Woodman, and Frank Morgan was seen in six different roles, including that of the "wonderful Wizard" himself. The film made a new kind of history with its network television premiere in 1956 on CBS. Nearly 45 million people tuned in for this initial telecast, marking the beginning of a tradition. | Ui, da ist ja ein Cover-Artwork schöner als das andere. Eigentlich war ich ja mit meiner jetzigen Oz-DVD zufrieden, aber bei den Extras werde ich mir wohl doch die 3-Disc-Edition genehmigen. Hoffentlich kommen die auch so in Deutschland raus. |

Warner Home Video will unleash the original RKO "King Kong" in a two-disc special edition Nov. 22.
The restored movie features long-missing frames from when Fay Wray falls from the Empire State Building.
Bonus features include a seven-part documentary including a look at "King Kong" remake director Peter Jackson, a new one-hour TCM doc on '33 "Kong" helmer Merian C. Cooper and audio commentary with archival recordings of cast and crew.
A few bonus features relate to an earlier, never-completed movie, "Creation," dinosaur footage from which was incorporated into "King Kong."
A collector's edition packaged in a tin will include the two-disc special edition and two more first-time DVD releases: the sequel released later in 1933, "The Son of Kong," as well as 1949's "Mighty Joe Young." Latter is accompanied by two featurettes on f/x artist Ray Harryhausen and commentary by Harryhausen, Ken Ralston and Terry Moore.
Warner also will be releasing separately Cooper's 1935 release "The Last of Pompeii."
Jackson jumps in
Jackson, who directs the Universal remake that will hit theaters less than a month after the DVD bowbow, was instrumental in the production of much of the bonus material on Warner's release, even spearheading a featurette about a 45-second segment involving a spider pit that was shot but not included because it was deemed too scary.
WHV senior veepee of catalog marketing George Feltenstein said there will be no mention or cross-promotion of the Universal movie on the Warner DVD, nor with the marketing of the U movie relative to the DVD.
Feltenstein said Warner has been on track to release the restored "King Kong" on DVD in the fourth quarter of this year ever since the studio finally uncovered an adequate film element to use.
Jackson approached Warner about helping out with the DVD release of the 1933 original right after he won his Oscars for the final "The Lord of the Rings" pic, Feltenstein said.
Although none of the Kong movies has ever been released on disc in the U.S., there have been DVD releases through separate licensing deals with RKO for overseas territories distribution.
There was no effort to include the 1976 Dino De Laurentiis remake of "King Kong" in the package or cross-promotion. That film, starring Jessica Lange, Jeff Bridges and Charles Grodin, has been distributed for some time on DVD by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Tolle News bezüglich "King Kong" und auch das "The Wizard of Oz"-Set gefällt mir von der Aufmachung her sehr gut. Bei Kong ist klar, daß ich mir die RC1 kaufen werde, wahrscheinlich dann das Gift-Set mit den drei Filmen. Bei Oz bin ich mir nicht sicher, ob das Set auch 1:1 in Deutschland erscheinen wird. Von den Extras her wäre das vielleicht möglich, ob eine RC2 aber auch die ganzen Kodachrome-Bilder und Filmprogramme enthalten würde, ist eine andere Sache. Wahrscheinlich kaufe ich mir das RC1 4-DVD-Set und behalte für die deutsche Tonspur meine alte RC2.

Die ersten beiden Reviews des "Ben-Hur"-Sets sind bei DVD-Town und DVD Movie Guideveröffentlicht worden. DVD-Town vergibt 10/10 Punkte für das Bild, bei DVD Movie Guide bekommt es die Note "A". Scheint also wieder eine tolle DVD von Warner geworden zu sein. Allerdings macht mir die Angabe des Bildformats von 2.50:1 bei DVD-Town etwas Sorgen. Mir ist aber schon aufgefallen, daß auf der Seite die Angaben bezüglich des Formats häufig nicht stimmen. Ob die an einen TV mit Overscan nachmessen? Keine Ahnung. Ich messe immer direkt am Screenshot mit der elektronischen Maßbandfunktion von Photshop.
Jeder soll ja seine eigene Meinung haben, aber mit diesem Teil des DVD Movie Guide-Reviews komme ich gar nicht überein:

Meiner Meinung nach ist die Stummfilmfassung sogar die bessere Verfilmung und vor allem deshalb freue ich mich auf das DVD-Set.
Ich bin noch ein wenig unentschlossen, ob ich mir das RC1-Set kaufen soll, oder doch noch lange bis November auf das deutsche 4-DVD-Set warten soll. Das ist noch so lange hin!

Wahrscheinlich werde ich auch zur RC1 greifen. Für den deutschen Ton kann ich dann die alte DVD behalten. Für die bekommt man ja eh nicht mehr viel.

Ich werde die deutsche Version kaufen, da diese wohl die gleiche Ausstattung und Qualität haben wird. Sooo lange ist das doch gar nicht mehr, nur noch zweieinhalb Monate. Den deutschen Ton brauche ich zwar auch nicht unbedingt, dafür habe ich ganz gerne Untertitel bei den Dokumentationen.

Die "RKO Production 601: The Making of Kong, Eighth Wonder of the World"-Doku des "King Kong"-Sets wird einen 15-minütigen Teil mit dem Titel "The Mystery of the Spider Sequence" beinhalten. Hier ist eine Beschreibung dessen, was einen erwartet:

Beim American Widescreen Museum gibt es einen sehr aufschlußreichen Vergleich der alten und der neuen "Ben Hur"-DVDs. Leider ist der Vergleich noch nicht sehr ausführlich, wie es aussieht, soll er aber noch erweitert werden. Im Gegensatz zum DVDBeaver-Vergleich sind dort auch zwei Screenshots der beiden DVDs in der gleichen Auflösung zu sehen.

Kurze Warnung vor dem kanadischen "Wizard of Oz" Set:
