1954/116 minutes/Black and White/Monaural/In French with optional English subtitles/1.33:1
An acknowledged influence on Psycho, Henri-Georges Clouzot's horror classic is the story of a sadistic headmaster who brutalizes his fragile wife and his headstrong mistress. The two women murder him and dump his body in a swimming pool; when the pool is drained, no corpse is found. Criterion presents Diabolique in a new digital transfer.

Diabolique
Accept no substitutes! This 1954 classic -- in a new digital transfer -- ranks with the best that Hitchcock offers. (Indeed, it was reportedly a big influence on Hitch's own Psycho). The wife (Vera Clouzot) of a sadistic boys' boarding school master (Paul Meurisse) conspires with his ex-mistress (Simone Signoret) to free themselves and the school of the tyrant, but their elaborate and seemingly perfect murder develops complications. Diabolique is a mystery that will keep you going right up to the closing credits.

[NOTE: Criterion has restored the original 116 minute running time, which was cut by almost 10 for US distribution.]
