A Japanese soldier fighting in Burma during World War II volunteers to convince a group of guerrillas to surrender. When the mountain fighters are killed, the soldier disguises himself as a Buddhist monk as he tries to return safely to his unit. Acting out the monk's role, he finds his opinions of war and human nature gradually changing. A moving anti-war drama, The Burmese Harp was a prize-winner at the Venice Film Festival for Kon Ichikawa.
