This dazzling film, one of the last two directed by Orson Welles, takes a playful look at a league of
famous fakers. With mock intensity, Welles investigates flamboyant art forger Elmyr de Hory and his
confidant Clifford Irving, whose biography of Howard Hughes emerged as the hoax of the 1970s.
Turning the camera on himself, Welles recalls how he bluffed his way onto the stage as a teenager and
how he incited hysteria with his War of the Worlds radio "report" of an alien invasion. For many,
F for Fake is Welles' best defence against arguments that he stole credit for writing Citizen
Kane. Welles- who crafted this masterwork from a documentary by Francois Reichenbach- boldly
demonstrates the elusive nature of authorship and truth.
