Employing a stylish film noir atmosphere (with compelling black-and-white cinematography by
Nestor Almendros), Truffaut's final film pays homage to one of his favorite directors: the
master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. When real estate agent Julien Vercel (Jean-Louis
Trintgnant) is framed for murder, his secretary Barbara (elegant Fanny Ardent), who is in
secretly in love with him, turns sleuth to unravel the mystery. Truffaut expertly combines
clever humor, tender romance, and heartstopping suspense for this thriller in the tradition of
the Hollywood detective genre.
The Criterion Collection travelled all the way to France to make a new widescreen transfer from the best available elements.
