G. W. Pabst's 1931 musical drama, with songs by Kurt Weill, is based on the play by Bertolt Brecht. Adolf Hitler saw too many biting parallels to Germany's politics and society; when he rose to power in 1933, he ordered every print of the film destroyed. Luckily, a negative survived, which means you can enjoy the adventures of Macheath and spellbinding musical numbers such as Lotte Lenya's rendition of "Pirate Jenny."
