Sublime romance and wicked affairs run rampant at a French estate in this 1939 farce by Jean Renoir. Cut by censors upon its release, the film was banned by the Vichy and Nazi governments during World War II. In 1982, an international critics' poll named it the second greatest film ever made.

Both Criterion editions feature an essay by Renoir expert Alexander Sesonske, as read by noted director Peter Bogdanovich. The CAV edition also offers excerpts from Jean Renoir le Patron, a 1967 documentary in which Renoir discusses The Rules of the Game.
