Lee Tamahori came out of nowhere with a film that echoed around the world. Violent, stylish, and disturbing, it bore the hand of a world-class filmmaker. On Criterion's edition of Once Were Warriors, Tamahori talks about movies, the Maori, and what it was like to make the film that outgrossed Jurassic Park in New Zealand.
More popular than Jurassic Park and The
Piano in its native New Zealand, Lee Tamahori's feature film debut shattered
audiences with its raw depiction of a Maori family imploded by domestic abuse.
Set in an Auckland housing project, the film unflinchingly follows the Heke
family members as they cling to their fierce but crumbling heritage. Warriors
features powerful performances by Rena Owen, Temuera Morrison, and Mamaengaroa
Kerr-Bell. Criterion's edition features commentary by Tamahori and
behind-the-scenes production footage.
Once Were Warriors is presented in the aspect ratio of 1.85:1. This new
digital transfer was created from a 35mm Intermediate Positive. The sound was
mastered from the 35mm Dolby Stereo Magnetic Sound master.
