While spoofing the sincerity of documentary filmmaking has a long
tradition, no one has taken the satire as far as the three young
filmmakers responsible for Man Bites Dog, widely regarded as the most
controversial film of 1993. Using low-budget documentary devices, Man
Bites Dog looks like a real documentary until Ben, our subject,
brutally strangles a passenger on a subway. The film escalates into
ever-increasing violence and black humor, culminating in a
particularly graphic scene cut from the film's American theatrical
release but included here. The Criterion edition also features an
interview with the filmmakers Remy Belvaux, Andre Bonzel, and Benoit
Poelvoorde, as well as their hilarious, award-winning short, Pas de C4
pour Daniel Daniel.
