Perhaps Akira Kurosawa's most masterly film, Ikiru is a sensitive tale of a man's confrontation with death. Given six months to live, Kenji Watanabe, an aging bureaucrat, searches for fulfillment after 25 years of being buried in meaningless routine. Watanabe wanders from the shallow pleasures of wine and sex, to the human companionship of a younger woman, and finally to an act of social responsibility by building a children's playground.
