Tristana
France-Italy-Spain 1970 / Directed by Luis Bunuel
A deliciously black comedy set in Twenties Toledo starring Fernando Rey, who plays an aging, hypocritical aristocrat who becomes the guardian and then lover of a young girl (Catherine Deneuve).
Looking for Langston
UK 1989 / Directed by Isaac Julien
A poetic, visually stunning fantasy of the life of black poet Langston Hughes, shot in beautiful monochrome.
From Akira Kurosawa, the master of Japanese cinema: High and Low, I Live in Fear, The Bad Sleep Well, Men Who Tred on Tiger's Tail, No Regrets for our Youth, One Wonderful Sunday, Sanshiro Sugata and The Most Beautiful. We will also be releasing two classic 50s cult films from Ishirô Honda; Godzilla (1954) and The Mysterians (1957).
Jacques Tati Shorts
In the earlier of these three short films, Jacques Tati began to flesh out his greatest comic creations - M. Hulot and Francois the postman. Includes Soigne ton gauche (Watch Your Left!) (1936), L'Ecole des facteurs (School for Postmen) (1947) and Cours du soir (Evening Classes) (1967).
Il Bidone
Italy 1955 / Directed by Federico Fellini
A richly dark and poetic film, this is a stark portrait of three small time crooks who aim to cheat the poor out of their life savings for a fictitious treasure that an obscure saint supposedly buried on their land.
Baadassss!
USA 2003 / Directed by Mario van Peebles
Mario van Peebles directs and stars in this chronicling of his father Melvin's struggle to make the groundbreaking neo-blaxploitation epic Sweet Sweetback's Baadassss Song (1971). Baadassss! relives the blood, sweat, and tears that went into the making of Melvin's pioneering piece of black independent cinema |
Zwei der Kurosawa-Titel erscheinen am 28. März: "High and Low" und "I live in Fear". Für "Tristana" hatte ich mal den 26. April 2005 als Termin aufgeschnappt.
Zwei der drei Tati-Kurzfilme sind entweder auf den Criterion-DVDs von "Mon Oncle" und "M. Hulot's Holiday" enthalten oder aber auch in der deutschen Tati-Box von Universum. Meines Wissens nach ist "Cours du soir" noch nicht auf DVD erhältlich.

Seht schön, gut das ich der Us DVD von Il Bidone immer wiederdstanden habe.
Auf Baadassss! bin ich auch sehr gespannt, bin ein riesen Fan des "Originals", hoffe der Film kann irgendwas von dieser Athomsphere einfangen. Für einen Blindkauf einer (ja nicht unbedingt billigen) BFI DVD reicht das Interesse dann aber auch nicht 
Bei Tristana, High and Low, I Live in Fear, The Bad Sleep Well und Sanshiro Sugata werde ich wohl erstmal warten ob Criterion da nicht was köchelt, ist ja auch schon länger als Grücht zu vernehmen.
