The Party and the Guests
(O Slavnosti a hostech)
A film by Jan Nemec
Czech Republic / 1966
Jan Nemec is one of the key figures in his country's new wave movement and is best known for his daring, intense journeys into the psychological processes of his characters that also served to give provocative insight into political oppression and family life.
Party and the Guests has been described as ' a controversial, unflinching satire of communist ideals versus brutal reality' and was voted as one of the best films of the 1960's by critics on The New York Times.
Nemec's film is a subversive tale that offers more than the obvious story and meaningless dialogues. The director shows how political oppression works and makes clear why regimes actually do work. A small group of peoples who want to join a party at a lake are held up by some thugs. They have to stand in a square that is written in the sandy ground. If they leave it they have to use the "door". Everything is under control till one of the "guests" brakes the line and leaves.
Nevertheless the thugs get him back.
The style of the film remains on early Bergman especially the beginning. The group is shown in a shot from a distance, they eat, laugh and have a good time. The reference to "Smiles Of A Summer Night" seems obvious.
Eine der neusten Discs von Second Run. Ein hervorragender Film, subtil und intelligent. Auch das Interview der Bonussektion ist sehr aufschlussreich, besonders was die Tschechische Zensur betraf.
Sehr zu empfehlen ! _________________ http://lostfilmbargains.blogspot.com/ |
